Crothers, Tim, The Man Watching: A Biography of Anson Dorrance, the Unlikely Architect of the Greatest College Sports Dynasty Ever (Sports Media Group, 1st. ed, later printing, 2006). ISBN 978-1-58726-434-4. Eighteen national championships and a 94% win rate seem to back up the claim at the University of North Carolina’s women’s soccer team is about as good as they get. Howe, Gordie & Colleen, ...and Howe! An Authorized Biography (Power Play Publications, 1995, 3rd printing), ISBN 0-9647149-0-6. The famed hockey star and his wife look back. SIgned by both. Hardcover, unclipped dust jacket, very good condition. HBB price: $50.

Kahn, Roger, The Boys of Summer (Harper & Row, 1st ed., 1972; later printing, 1976). ISBN 06-012239-0. Interwoven stories of Kahn’s rise through sports journalism at the New York Herald Tribune and the boys of the 1950s Brooklyn Dodgers. Though some critics faulted its nostalgic tone as a little over the top, the book is consistently rated one of the best sports book of the last century; it went through over ninety printings and sold more than three million copies. Kinney, Francis S., Skene’s Elements of Yacht Design (Dodd, Mead, 8th ed. 5th printing, 1981). ISBN 0-396-07968-7. In print since 1927, Skene’s has been the bible for generations of power and sailboat designers. The 8th edition was significantly expanded to include new material, and remains highly collectible. 7.25” x 10.25”. Hardcover, unclipped dust jacket, good condition. HBB price: $50.

Lombardi, Vince, Vince Lombardi on Football ( New York Graphic Society, 1st ed., 1st printing, 1973). Two volume set, slipcased. Forest green padded leatherette covers, matching board case with full color photo of Lombardi on one side.  Heavy cardboard divider between the two volumes. Missing the rare 7” 33 rpm vinyl recording and poster that accompanied the set. Very rare, in very good condition. HBB price: $75.

McCarthy, Matt, Odd Man Out: A Year on the Mound With a Minor League Misfit (Viking, 1st ed., 2nd printing, 2009). “When I was twenty-one, I could throw a baseball 92 miles an hour. This led to a strange courtship between my left arm and a series of pencil-moustached, overweight men.”  Yale molecular biology major McCarthy got signed with the Provo Angels for a year before going to Harvard Medical School. McKissick, John (with Billy G. Baker), Called To Coach II (United Graphics, 2004, 1st ed, #1688 of 3100 copies, 2004). ISBN 09759948-0-8. A book of “life lessons” from the winningest high school football coach in America. McKissick became head coach at Summerville, SC High School in 1952 and has remained there ever since. McPhee, John, The Founding Fish (Farrar Straus Giroux, 1st ed., 1st printing, 2002). ISBN 0-374-10444-1. In the days before Tina Brown, The New Yorker ran series of articles on all manner of topics, drilled way down into by the always entertaining John McPhee. Tina moved on, as she always does, but Eustace Tilley has never been the same. This post-Tina work is a look at shad, the fish made famous in Cole Porter’s “Let’s Do It,” and other matters piscatorial. Fascinating reading. Hardcover, unclipped dust jacket. Very good condition. Ouimet, Francis, A Game of Golf: A Book of Reminiscence (1932, limited ed. by The Old Golf Shop, Cincinnati, 1978, No. 57 of 250). 20 year old former caddie and unknown amateur Francis Ouimet stunned the sports world by beating the godlike Harry Vardon in the 1913 U.S. Open, making the front page of the New York Times in the process. Ouimet (1893-1967) changed the perception of golf as the game for the super-rich and became a beloved figure in golf through the decades. This very limited edition is part of an annual series reprinting of books by the honoree of the annual Memorial Tournament, started in 1976 to honor those- living and dead- who did the most to advance the sport. A very rare edition of an excellent autobiography. Green boards with gilt edging and titles, no dust jacket, very good condition. 8.75” x 5.75”, 274 pp. HBB price: $175.

Paysour, Buck, Bass Fishing in North Carolina (Haw River Press, 1977). Longtime business page editor for The Greensboro Daily News, Paysour was also one dedicated bass fisherman. This book was the first devoted to the sport’s North Carolina waters in over 75 years. Hardcover, unclipped dust jacket, very good condition. Pazdur, Ed, ed., Television Boxing Guide (Windsor Publications, 1st ed, 1954). Paperback. Fascinating bit of ephemera from the dawn of televised sports. This 159 pp. guide is a who-was-who of mid-20th century boxing, with photos and bios arranged by weight class. Dinged-up and written in, but still a remarkable find for boxing fan. HBB price: $20.

Popely, Rick, with L. Spencer Riggs, Indianapolis 500 Chronicles (Publications International, 1st ed., 1st printing, 1998). A lavishly illustrated, quarto volume of the race’s first 90 years, presented in chronological order. Hardcover, unclipped dust jacket, good condition- slight damage to upper right cover corner and dust jacket. HBB price: $35.

Proper, Datus C., Pheasants of the Mind:  A Hunter’s Search for A Mythic Bird (Prentice hall Press, 1st ed., 1st printing, 1990). ISBN 0-13-662750-1. A Montana naturalist philosopher (“It is impossible to read this without being reminded of Garrison Keillor at his best,” famed food writer M.F.K. Fisher wrote), contemplates nature and the challenges of hunting for pheasant. Hardcover, unclipped dust jacket, very good condition, autographed. HBB price: $75.

Sarazen, Gene, with Herbert Warren Wind, Thirty Years of Championship Golf (1950, limited ed. by The Old Golf Shop, Cincinnati, 1979, No. 109 of 260). Sarazen (1902-99) was one of the world’s best golfers in the 1920s and ‘30s, and one of the five pro golfers to win the Grand Slam. The book recalls his remarkable career. Walsh, Christy, Baseball’s Greatest Lineup (A.S. Barnes & Co., 1st ed., 1952). LOC 52-8286. Christy Walsh, a cartoonist and sportswriter, saw the future of baseball one day, and its name was Babe Ruth. He dogged Ruth to see him for two years, and when he finally got in, he asked Ruth how much he’d been paid for a newspaper article. “Five dollars.” “I can get you a hundred,” Walsh replied, and for the next 27 years he made Ruth a wealthy man through better contract negotiations and product endorsements. Walsh was the first great sports superagent, representing the cream of American sports- Ty Cobb, Knute Rockne and Lou Gehrig, among others. Baseball’s Greatest Lineup is a collection of profiles of sportswriters’ picks for baseball’s greatest, 1900 to 1950. Thoughtful, funny, the book makes you think Walsh invented fantasy baseball as well. Hardcover, no dust jacket, very good condition.
