In a rare mis-step during the US Postal Service's last golden age of stamp design, the 150th anniversary issue for Henry David Thoreau was a bust.

Taken from an 1856 daguerreotype, the 1967 issue made the author of Walden, and Civil Disobedience, look like some sort of fungal creation from an H.P. Lovecraft story:



2017 is Thoreau's 200th anniversary, and the Postal Service is making amends:
