Floyd Skloot is a three-time Pushcart Prize winner and the author of 20 books, including In the Shadow of Memory (U. of Nebraska Press) which won the PEN USA Literary Award in creative nonfiction, the poetry collections Approaching Winter, The Snow's Music and The End of Dreams (LSU Press, 2015, 2008, 2006) and the new novel The Phantom of Thomas Hardy (University of Wisconsin Press).

I came across him almost forty years ago, when I was a senior in college and an assistant editor of my college’s literary magazine, St Andrews Review. Skloot, then thirty, was working for a Minnesota social services agency.

He sent some to SAR. I was dazzled. The man could write brilliant verse about state government! I have been impressed by his range and versatility ever since.

Skloot popped up on my radar again Monday, when I found him interviewing author Christine Sneed for The Rumpus, an online litmag.

That, in turn, reminded me I have a fine inscribed copy of one of his early books. You should buy it before I change my mind and decide to keep it all to myself:

Skloot, Floyd, The Open Door, (Story Line Press, 1st, ed. 1st printing, softcover, 1997). ISBN 1-885266-48-0. The Open Door is his third novel and shows us how two boys, growing up in a Jewish enclave in Brooklyn io the 1950s, grow up and deal with the unplanned inheritance of their parents’ physical and emotional abuse. Octavo, 199 pp. Very good condition. Inscribed by the author on the half title page, autographed on the title page. Publisher’s postcard for the book tipped in. HBB price: $35.
