A professional historian who taught at William & Mary, UCLA and UC Santa Cruz, Page Smith (1917-1995) wrote over twenty books and was a noted activist in homeless issues for decades. His two-volume John Adams was the first to make full use of Adams’ personal papers, and won the Bancroft Prize in History for 1963. While McCullough's work has swept the field in recent years, Smith's longer narrative allows a much-more fine-grained view of a life rich with with incident, and the endlessly fascinating prospect of a small group of men winning a war, and creating a nation, all on the fly.
