At 80, the spy writer John LeCarre has published his long-awaited memoir. This is a major literary event in the UK.

The Guardian is celebrating with a series of readings from LeCarre's work. Here, the retired spy Geroge Smiley- his faithless wife having cleaned out his bank account- contemplates selling a book.
