Women's History Month Biographies: the lively life of Mark Twain's mom, in a fine first edition

jane clemens.jpg

Varble, Rachel M., Jane Clemens: The Story of Mark Twain’s Mother (Doubleday, stated 1st ed. 1964). LOC 64-19286. Vivid recreation of the life and times of the writer and his parents. Lavishly illustrated end pages. Hardcover, octavo, unclipped dust jacket, very good condition, 374 pp. HBB price: $40 obo.

Varble (1893-1976) was prolific Kentucky novelist and young adult writer for some forty years. Family connections to the Clemenses enliven her well-written biography of Mark Twain’s mother, Jane Lampton Clemens (1803-1890), a largely-forgotten figure in the life of one of America’s greatest novelists.

Though- as is the case for too many women writers- biographical information on Varble is scarce, Jane Clemens is a work of solid scholarship, and a good read. It’s also in remarkably good condition for its age!
