She was born in Ukraine this day in 1898; grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; moved to Palestine in 1921; raised $50,000,000 from Americans to launch the State of Israel in 1948; signed its declaration of independence, went to Moscow as ambassador on the first Israeli passport; spent 25 years in Parliament; served as Labor and Foreign Minister; became the nation’s only woman prime minister; fought and won a war and earned the moniker “Iron Lady” before Margaret Thatcher; and died at 80.
