Book of the Day: a spy who never had calms before storms

Vince Flynn's above-the-law superspy Mitch Rapp is a man for our time:

Flynn, Vince, Transfer of Power (Pocket Books, 1st ed, 3rd printing, 1999). ISBN 0-671-02315-9. Killing machine Mitch Rapp tears up the rulebook yet again, and tunnels come in handy. One of 14 thrillers by writer Vince Flynn,  Rapp is a hard-bitten all-American lacrosse player from Syracuse U whose girlfriend was killed in the Lockerbie Pan Am bombing; recruited into the CIA a week after graduation, he buried his grief in learning how to kill Arab terrorists.  Later, his pregnant wife was killed by more terrorists, and Rapp- never one to play much by the rule book- evolved into a killer whose excesses- and lectures to presidents and congressional leaders on the evils of liberalism- were tolerated mostly because they produce such excellent results. Well-plotted, Flynn’s books are truly hard to put down.

Transfer of Power is in hardcover, unclipped dust jacket, fine condition, autographed bookplate on half title page as “Vincent J. Flynn.” Transfer of Power is the first of Flynn’s novels featuring secret agent Rapp. Flynn died in 2013, three months after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. HBB price: $100.
