Born today in 1849, Henry Clay Frick sought to bury his union-busting business career with an eye-popping art collection. In 1910, he issued a catalogue to it.

Paintings in the Collection of Henry Clay Frick, at One East Seventieth Street, New York (Privately printed, 1910). This rare volume was produced as a gift to a friend of Pittsburgh industrialist Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919). He moved to New York in 1905 and constructed a mansion at E. 70th Street and Fifth Avenue, 1910-12. There he displayed part of his collections of Old Masters and European furnishings. 

When Frick died in 1919 he left the house and its contents as a museum but granted his wife a life estate. After she died in 1931, the museum opened. It is reckoned one of the finest small art museums in the world, its collections greatly expanded by his daughter.

Softcover, full limp morocco with gilt titling; sepia illustrations. 151 pp., octavo. Some rubbing along the front joint and at the spine’s head and tail. Otherwise in very good condition. Rare. HBB price: $150 obo.
