Birthday Books: as Sir Winston wrote, "“If you cannot read all your books...fondle them---peer into them, let them fall open where they will, read from the first sentence that arrests the eye, set them back on the shelves with your own hands, arrange them on your own plan so that you at least know where they are. Let them be your friends; let them, at any rate, be your acquaintances.”

In honor of the 143rd birthday of Sir Winston Churchill, Henry Bemis Books is pleased to offer a non-collector’s set of William Manchester and Paul Reid’s massive three-volume biography, The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill.

Over thirty years in the making, the story of Britain’s greatest leader was undertaken by famed author William Manchester. The first volume, Visions of Glory 1874-1932, appeared in 1983.

The second, Alone 1932-1940, was published in 1988. The third- Defender of the Realm 1940-1965 was completed, after a stroke left Manchester unable to write, by his friend Paul Reid, a North Carolina writer, and published in 2012.

This is a mixed hardcover set, with dustjackets showing slight wear. The first volume is a Book of the Month Club edition, but bears the same dust jacket and is the same size as the other two. The second and third volumes are the Little, Brown trade editions. The third volume is the first edition. Just under three thousand pages in total, recounted by a master storyteller, The Last Lion is a perfect gift for a young history buff, the family Anglophile, or just anyone who looks forward to spending the winter with a good long read.

Henry Bemis price: $50 the set. Because these volumes are heavy, shipping will be calculated to the purchaser’s destination and added to the sales price.  Local buyers are welcome to collect them in person.
