Birthdays, ridiculous and sublime

Widely considered the worst novelist in the English language- good news, E.L. James!- Amanda McKittrick Ros was born today in 1860. Lindsay Thompson considers her work- at painful length- in this week's episode of Gallimaufry.

James Thurber was born today in 1894. Morose and half-blind, he nevertheless, somehow, endures as one of the greatest of 20thC comic writers.

Born in 1885, Kenneth Roberts is now largely forgotten, but after a wordwide and successful journalism career, he sat down at the end of his life to write a masterpiece about a Revolutionary War battle in South Carolina.
